Five Basic Dog Commands

Since we welcomed our newest addition a couple of weeks ago, we have been pretty busy training the little guy. When Bentley was a puppy, he caught on pretty quickly, especially when there was a treat involved. Lambo is no different. Within three days of having him around, my husband taught him the commands sit, up and down.

The best piece of advice we can give is to be consistent when training your puppy. We are not dog trainers or animal specialists by any means. But after going through the stages with Bentley, we feel that we are seasoned vets when it comes to basic training.

We have noticed that if you are teaching your puppy new commands and tricks, it is important to always carry treats with you. We tried Zuke’s Mini Naturals Dog Treats – Peanut Butter flavor and Lambo absolutely loves them! (Bentley also wanted to taste test them and he was salivating at the mouth!) They are only 3.5 calories per treat, which make them great for frequent rewards and training. They are also ideal for any age and breed.

The naturally delicious formula makes all the difference with quality protein and mouthwatering taste, who wouldn’t sit down for one of these little treats?

Dog Training - Stay Command

We made sure to introduce the treat, say the command in a stern voice, guide the dog to sit/stay and give him the treat. After a couple of treats, the dog caught on quickly. Once he did it on his own, we would reward him with a treat and say in a happy tone of voice, “Good sit! Good sit!” and give him head rubs. This reinforces our command and shows the pup that we are happy when he listens!

Basic Commands:

  1. Sit
  2. Down
  3. Up
  4. Stay
  5. Come

There are some more advanced commands such as roll-over, speak, fetch, etc. but these are the tricks we started teaching our dogs right away.

  1. You puppies are adorable!! I want one sooo bad!! I don’t think I am assertive enough which is why when we do get when to puppy school we will go!! What kind of dogs are they??

    1. Thank you! My husband is the alpha male and the dogs definitely listen to him more than they do me… Bentley is a boxer and Lambo is a Bull Puggle! They are adorable! Puppy brothers! Thanks for reading!

  2. Our dog used to be super trained in the beginning and then we started to slack off and weren’t as consistent anymore. In the last few months, I have our dog better trained than my husband did in the beginning! 🙂 I’m rather impressed with my training abilities haha

    1. You go girlfriend!!!! I did teach Bentley a couple of commands… But my husband does the majority of the teaching…

  3. They are adorable! We’re thinking 2015 is gonna be our puppy year. Our kids are 3 and 6 and adding a puppy to the mix doesn’t seem TOO crazy anymore. Have treats always, good to know! 🙂 (We have a lot to learn…)

    1. I will be writing more posts about our experience with Bentley and now Lambo… Puppies are adorable but they are hard work, but worth it in the end 🙂

  4. We use those exact same treats, I love them! I found them on when I was browsing for healthier snacks for our husky/shepherd mix, and we’ve been using them to help train her not to pull on the least. She’s 2 but didn’t really have many commands down when we got her from the humane society last year. I love finding any information I can on dog training, thanks!

    1. You’re welcome! Stay tuned – many more tips and tricks coming up – I have learned by listening to others advice and that’s why I share our experiences!

      Aren’t dogs the best!?

  5. Love Zuke’s! I used them when going through agility training with one of my dogs. They are absolutely the perfect size! Although I am not sure my Moose ever really tasted them as they went down her throat. 🙂 Congrats on your new addition!
