What If I Fall? Musings of a (Very) Small Business Owner

When I started my Etsy business last summer, I was unsure how it would take off. It was hard to juggle a second business on top of my everyday 9-5 job, but I was determined to create beautiful things and grow this little shop of mine. But, I was nervous to take the leap and start something new, when I had just started a new career a couple of months prior.

Word of mouth has been my biggest referral, and I always appreciate the support I have received from my friends and family. If it wasn’t for them (+ my oversharing on social media)… my shop wouldn’t be where it is today. I am thankful for the people who have gone out of their way to support me and I believe in supporting others in any way I can.

When Sarah, owner of Scout Design Shop located in Long Beach, NY, approached me last fall about purchasing some ornaments for her clients, I was ecstatic. I have known Sarah for quite some time and I have watched her new shop blossom into this beautiful business, where she not only services the newly engaged couples in all of their wedding planning needs, but also creates aesthetically charming boards, invites, banners, and the like for any type of occasion. Her shop houses great paper products and cute gift ideas and I was excited to be able to work with her. I knew that I could learn a thing or two about owning a business from her strong work ethic.

This summer, she invited me to her store’s one year anniversary party, and I quickly volunteered to donate a bunch of my elastic hair ties, a new product that I was launching soon in my Etsy store. Sarah loved the idea; and soon asked if I would be interested in selling some other elastic hair tie packs in her store. I was thrilled! I never thought I would see a product of mine sitting on the shelves in one of my local stores. Sarah was giving me a chance and I was grateful for that.

I often think of how nervous I was to put my name out there. Looking back, I am glad I made the leap into the unknown. My dream is to own my own business one day, and this is just the beginning.

  1. Oh my gosh I’m so happy for you!!!!!!!!!! I feel like I can say, “I knew her back when…” only it was only a year ago. Hehe! Congratulations on turning something fun into something serious! 🙂

  2. If you fail, you learn; and without failure we wouldn’t know what success feels like. I’m glad you took a chance. 🙂
